Behind the Blue Monster

About the Project

Chris Ivy is not just a baseball fan. He’s one of those baseball fans -- keeping meticulous record of strikes, hits, errors -- anything of note that happens during a game. He’s been watching (and documenting) the Durham Bulls, a triple-A minor league team, since he moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1980.

In 2008, the opportunity to operate the Bulls’ manual scoreboard came available and Ivy jumped at the chance. “It was quirky enough that it seemed like it would be real interesting, something out of the ordinary,” he said. Since then, Ivy has kept score at nearly every home game from behind the ballpark’s back wall -- the Blue Monster. “With 10,000 people in the stands you never want to make a mistake,” he said, “but that doesn’t happen very often.”

This video was produced for the Durham Herald-Sun as part of a series about behind-the-scenes jobs at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
