Breaking Through

About the Project

Breakdancing, also known as "breaking" or "b-boying/b-girling", is considered one of the four pillars of Hip Hop Culture (along with MC-ing, DJ-ing and graffiti writing). A unique, athletic style of dance and expression, breaking emerged on the streets of New York City in the 1970s and spread around the world. Even though women "battled" (competed) alongside men since the early days of breaking, few women were accepted into the male-dominated scene. In this short documentary, we follow four b-girls that are committed to making their mark on the breakdancing world.

Hip hop pioneers like Ana "Rokafella" Garcia, has spent decades breaking with legendary crews such as The Transformers, The Breeze Team and others. Garcia and others paved the way for up-and-coming breakers like Lucila "Lu" Greco, who traveled to the Bronx, N.Y. from her native Argentina to put her skills to the test in the birthplace of hip hop.
