Participatory Budgeting 2023

Client: The City of Durham

About the Project

In 2018, Durham became the second city in North Carolina to adopt Participatory Budgeting (PB), a process of democratic deliberation and decision-making, in which ordinary people decide how to allocate part of a public budget. Participatory budgeting allows residents to identify, discuss, and prioritize public spending projects and gives them the power to make real decisions about how money is spent. This past year was the city's third cycle of PB.

The City of Durham approached us to make a video to explain the PB process and inspire Durham residents to vote in the upcoming cycle. We proposed the idea of filming interviews in locations that were improved by previous cycles so residents could see the tangible results of their participation. We also created original motion graphics elements to visually explain elements of the PB process. It's certainly a challenge to make engaging content from government administrative processes, but we welcomed the challenge and were really pleased with the result.
